Better Words for "interesting"
“Interesting” is the writer's hedge. It signals that you noticed something but didn't quite commit to a reaction. Replace it with a verb of response or a more specific adjective.
compelling, fascinating, thought-provoking, intriguing, absorbing, remarkable, striking, surprising
When you mean engaging
Use these when the thing held your attention.
It's an interesting book.
It's an absorbing book — I finished it in a weekend.
When you mean thought-provoking
Use these when the thing made you reconsider something.
That's an interesting take.
That's a provocative take — it complicates what I assumed.
When you mean surprising
Use these when the discovery was unexpected.
We saw an interesting pattern.
We saw a counterintuitive pattern in the retention data.
Common mistake
“That's interesting” is often a stall, not a response. If you mean “I disagree,” say so.
